Description:

Changing the focus from learner outcomes towards teaching and learning results in higher levels of attainment and progression.

Reynolds Training decided to change their focus from learner outcomes to improved teaching, learning and assessment, with the aim of achieving higher levels of attainment and improved progression. In order to achieve this, the organisation set itself two key objectives. Firstly, in pursuit of staff that were inspirational and highly skilled in their occupational area, they decided to recruit on the basis of their sector experience and capability and not on their teaching practice or qualifications. Secondly, the organisation wanted to create a ‘hot house’ of teaching competencies and develop qualified status as part of organisational CPD activity. In order to achieve this, Reynolds:

  1. Used CPD days to refocus staff on the characteristics of “a successful and happy learner that progresses” and map these to teaching and assessment practices
  2. Restructure the observation process to utilise experienced and competent practitioners
  3. Use Learner Voice in the observation process
  4. Engage Advanced Practitioners in a targeted programme to support teachers in developing their skills.

 

Purpose:

Change the focus from learner outcomes to improved teaching, learning & assessment and recruit, and more effectively utilise, subject specialists rather than teaching specialists

 

What Worked Well:

  • being taught by subject specialists who were focused on learning rather than outcomes
  • being taught by staff who were observed in a way which supported improvement in teaching
  • they were placed at the heart of the purpose of the organisation
  • their voices were heard and listened to
  • improved progression and hence achievement
  • greater satisfaction with the learning experience

The net effect has been a dramatic improvement in results. Learners now make excellent progress, with 95% of learners on the study programme achieving. Achievement in functional skills is 88% with a cohort of 450 learners.

Benefits for Organisation: 

Progression is now very effective, with 80% of learners on the study programme moving into L3 Apprenticeships. These improvements have been confirmed by Learners’ Satisfaction data which shows that 97% of learners are either satisfied, or very satisfied, with their learning experience.
